Justin Phipps

How many years have you been snowboarding?
19 years

What’s your first memory of being on a board?
Not on a snowboard, but my first memory of being on a hill was learning how to ski at Loveland when I was three. My dad took me up the bunny hill and had me on one of those harnesses to keep me from getting out of control. When he bent down to strap in I took off down the hill on my own and disappeared from him. Then he found me about halfway down the hill stuck upside down in a tree well, hahahah.

Where did you learn to snowboard?
I learned to snowboard at Loveland and Copper.

What was the first trick you ever learned?
The first trick I learned was probably a super zeached boardslide or something, but the first trick I remember being really hyped on learning was a back 360 melon.

What was the first snowboarding video you ever saw?
Think Thank Right Brain Left Brain, but I would always watch the Right Brain side more.

Who had the biggest influence on your riding when you were starting out?
Scott Stevens was probably my first big influence when I was starting out, he had my favorite part in that Think Thank video and inspired me to learn a bunch of one foot tricks when I was younger.

Who’s your biggest influence now?
Recently I feel more influenced by things outside of snowboarding, mainly skateboarding and music. I think there's elements about both of those things that appeal to me whether it be the creativity or the feeling, so I’ve found a lot more inspiration pulling from those than from snowboarding itself.

Who do you think is the most underrated or underappreciated snowboarder out there?
Markus Rustad

What video part do you watch to get hyped before filming?
Buzzcut Jed Anderson

When was the last time you scared yourself snowboarding?
I’m still scared before I hit every spot.

What was the last trick you filmed?
5050 transfer backlip when we got a bit of snow in Salt Lake this March.

It just snowed two feet in a city five hours away. Who’s jumping in the van with you for the road trip?
The drinking chat.

On that trip, you find the perfect down bar. How many stairs is it? What’s your go-to trick—and your dream trick?
20 stairs, go to trick would be a hardway cab two, dream trick would hardway front two ideally with a pull back.

It’s going to dump two feet overnight at your local resort. Who are you calling to ride with in the morning?
The roomies, Keyan, Tommy, and Bob.

Describe a perfect day on the board.
Springtime at Woodies, probably showing up around 1 in the afternoon with all the homies to take a couple laps then drink beers on the blacktop.

What’s your go-to L1 kit for street and park laps? What about for powder days?
The go to street and park kit is the Rankin pants and Rankin jacket. In the powder I’m rocking the Rankin pants with the Axial jacket.
